Selected speeches and orations of Webster, some classified as masterpieces of
oratory, to illustrate his genius and character.
This volume contains selected famous speeches and orations of Daniel Webster, to
illustrate his genius and character as a lawyer, statesman, Senator, negotiator,
patriot, and citizen. An introductory essay describes and explains the man as a
master of English style. Stemming from his genuine respect for the intellect of
the average man, Daniel Webster was able to exert immense influence over others
by his power to make his statements understood, to frame arguments in logical
sequence, and to inflame the sentiment of patriotism. He did not depart from
simplicity, and used only the words he felt he had earned the right to use.
Included is Webster's argument, at the age of 36 years, before the Supreme Court
in the famous Dartmouth College case. That case placed him in the front ranks of
constitutional lawyers in the nation. The "Reply to Hayne" speech is
also included, given on the "Foot's resolution" in the Senate in 1830,
and is probably one of the greatest masterpieces of eloquence in oratory.
Examples of his style are found in speeches in other formal settings as well as
before miscellaneous assemblages of the people.
